Manufacture: marbling of paper
This technique involves using a paint brush to sprinkle spots of coloured ink onto a special liquid contained in a vat. The liquid is a gelatine extracted from seaweed. The coloured spats float and spread out on the surface of the liquid, and then, by using combs and other tools they are formed into various patterns such as the traditional “peacock’s tail”, marble veining and other fanciful designs.
Prev At this point, after patterning, a sheet of paper is carefully laid down on the surface of the liquid. The floating colours stick to the paper and the pattern is transferred. The sheet is then lifted from the surface, cleaned of excess liquid and hung to dry.
The procedure is repeated for each sheet of the same series, but each pattern is slightly different and it is this uniqueness that gives special value to marbled paper as compared to printed paper.
